What is this Community of Practice all about?

Launched in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CDP community has rapidly grown to include nearly 2,000 CDI members working in all walks of career development. The community discusses a wide range of topics and members regularly pose questions and requests for help related to their areas of practice.

The Community of Practice is hosted on Facebook, a platform chosen following member feedback and its suitability for maintaining community discussions.  The value of this platform is regularly reviewed and compared against other options by the community’s management team.

Features include:

  • Questions and topics posted and discussed that span the full range of career development work
  • Information sharing, keeping you up to date
  • Resources and continuous professional development opportunities
  • Monthly #careercommercials and #careersimpact features

Membership of the CDP community is part of our package of membership benefits, so you will need to be a CDI member to participate. This allows us to offer moderated and mediated discussions which avoid commercial bias and ensures that content complies with the CDI Code of Ethics.

Management of the Community

The community is overseen by CDI staff, with discussions moderated by Dave Cordle and Liz Reece.

Dave Cordle has over 20 years’ experience as an independent career coach and works with adults at all stages of their career, as well as young people preparing to transition from education into the world of work. He is a fellow and former president of the CDI.

Liz Reece has worked in the sector for four decades and is a registered career development professional. She has won a national award for careers education, is a CDI Fellow and is a Quality in Careers Standard assessor.

Community member comments

It’s brilliant being involved with such a supportive community.

I love it! As a new member, it has given me information on resources and news events that I possibly wouldn't find elsewhere. Also, as a lot of my work is based around Facebook, it pops up in my news feed so I am more likely to see it rather than keep logging into the CDI website.

Love it. It feels warm, collaborative, and it’s a mine of useful information - things I want to know and things I didn’t know I wanted to know but do now! Thank you for moderating the page.

Highly skilled professionals, who care about what they do, all supporting each other. Love the resources Q&As and the titbits of advice!

Really useful information if you've newly qualified. Useful for information on sectors you're not currently working in. You can ask questions without feeling silly.

I love this group, the members are friendly, helpful and generous. It is welcoming and friendly, people are happy to help, advise and share their experience. Thank you everyone, you are amazing.

I love the collaboration. It really does feel like we are a community.

It’s gives me the chance to network, share and support others in the journey and most importantly it’s lots of fun.

Good quality questions. Often, (in real-time) drawn to a group because of a FB notification where you can't see the question and you waste time, but not in this group.
