CDI Calls for Career Guidance Guarantee to Maximise Apprenticeship Opportunities
David Morgan, Chief Executive of the CDI, commented:
National Apprenticeship Week's 'Skills for Life' theme hits the nail on the head. Apprenticeships aren't just about getting a job – they're about starting a career. They offer a brilliant way for people to earn while they learn, picking up practical skills that employers are crying out for.
The expansion of apprenticeship opportunities, from foundation to degree level, is opening doors across a wide range of sectors. This diversity is vital, as it caters to different learning styles and career aspirations. It's not about choosing between university or an apprenticeship anymore – it's about finding the right path for each individual. We're seeing apprenticeships pop up in all sorts of fields now, from traditional trades to cutting-edge tech. This variety is fantastic because it means more people can find a path that suits them.
But making the most of these opportunities requires good information and guidance. Our recent Valuing Careers research highlighted that many adults struggle to access careers support, and that those with the most barriers to accessing career guidance would benefit the most from it. That's why we're pushing for a Career Guidance Guarantee for all young people and adults. We want everyone to be able to access support from a career development professional to really explore their options, including apprenticeships.
Apprenticeships are a win-win. They help individuals develop valuable skills and confidence, while also allowing businesses to nurture talent that meets their specific needs. As we mark National Apprenticeship Week, let's celebrate this practical, hands-on approach to learning that's opening doors for people and helping to plug skills gaps across the economy.
On Wednesday February 12, CDI’s #WeAreCareers podcast is holding a special podcast for National Apprenticeship Week. For more information and to access live shows and recordings, please visit: thecdi.net/communities-and-networks/wearecareers
