Getting into medical school 2024 entry
The book starts with a good insight into medical courses, how they vary in terms of teaching style and detailed case studies including current ‘hot topics’. The chapter on work experience has handy tips on what to get out of a successful placement, including what to include in a diary (not just a list of activities, but what you have learned from your experiences.) It also gives ideas for wider placements in the community, along with the values and skills required to be a successful doctor.

Several times the phrase ‘Medical School is a journey, not a target’ comes through, stressing that there are alternatives to Medical School entry straight from 6th form as several case studies demonstrate. There is a helpful guide to UCAT/ BMAT along with sample practice questions.
Advice from admissions tutors regarding the personal statement includes reflecting back on work experience and the interpersonal/soft skills that were identified and gained/developed following this. It also gives a list of things to avoid along with interview preparation and mock interview questions – possibly the most useful part of the book looks at ethical scenarios, role play and other types of question.
What to do on results day (if things don’t go to plan), nonstandard applications, support for SEND, fees and funding - including bursaries and scholarships – are covered in the final chapter, outlining the most common paths the follow after graduating, with a brief overview of specialisms and alternatives to explore.
This is a great read for Year 10 pupils interested in a career in medicine to help identify the journey ahead of them before they even secure a place and then to be re-read from Chapter 4 onwards in Year 12 prior to application.
